A 15-year-old boy was arrested after police found a wounded 21-year-old man on campus.
DALY CITY, Calif. — Police arrested a 15-year-old boy after a 21-year-old man was stabbed Friday during a fight that erupted on the Westmoor High School campus after graduation, authorities said.
The fight was reported about 4:30 p.m., shortly after the ceremony at the Daly City school. Officers arrived to find a man with stab wounds that police said were not life-threatening. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment as officers worked to clear the campus.
Daly City police said the teen was identified as the suspect and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. A weapon was recovered at the scene. Police said no one else was reported injured, but investigators have not said what started the fight or how many people took part.
Video from the campus showed several people fighting on an outdoor basketball court as graduates in caps and gowns and family members stood nearby. In one clip, officers moved through the crowd and chased people on foot. Another clip showed a person bleeding from the face and torso.
Westmoor Principal Victor Zou said police and emergency personnel responded immediately. “We understand this news is deeply upsetting for our students, families, staff, and community,” Zou said in a written statement. “Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this incident.”
The school, part of the Jefferson Union High School District, is located at 131 Westmoor Ave. District officials said the victim had no relationship to the district. Officials have not confirmed whether the arrested teen attends Westmoor or another school.
The case remains under investigation by Daly City police. Because the suspect is a minor, many details about the arrest and any court process may be limited. Police had not announced additional arrests or a date for a public briefing by Monday.
The stabbing followed what was supposed to be a celebration for graduating seniors and their families. The violence drew a large emergency response and left school officials balancing the close of the academic year with questions about campus safety and the events that led to the fight.
Police said the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening and that the recovered weapon is part of the investigation. Detectives are expected to continue reviewing witness accounts and video from the scene.
