Hong Kong, China — A tragic accident at Hong Kong International Airport has claimed the lives of two security personnel after a cargo plane skidded off the runway and collided with their patrol vehicle. The incident occurred early Monday morning, resulting in both the aircraft and the vehicle plunging into the sea.
The casualties were situated in the security patrol vehicle at the time of the crash. Fortunately, all four crew members aboard the Boeing 747, operated by Turkish ACT Airlines under lease by Emirates, emerged unscathed. The aircraft had just arrived in Hong Kong from Dubai, touching down at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time.
According to Steven Yiu, executive director of airport operations, the plane did not seek assistance before landing. After taxiing about halfway down the runway, it lost control and veered off to the left. “The patrol car did not hastily enter the runway. It was the plane that left the runway and struck the patrol vehicle outside the fenced area,” Yiu explained during a press briefing.
Emergency crews arrived to find the plane’s wreckage in two parts, floating in the water. The crew members were identified at the open doorway of the aircraft, awaiting rescue. Fire services official Yiu Men-Yeung confirmed that it took first responders approximately 40 minutes to locate the two security workers, who were trapped in their vehicle.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety protocols in place at one of the world’s busiest airports. Immediate investigations have been initiated to determine the cause of the skidding and any procedural failures leading up to the crash. Experts suggest that reviewing taxiing procedures and enhancing communication between air and ground operations may be critical in preventing such tragedies in the future.
In the wake of this incident, the airport has expressed sorrow over the loss of life and is cooperating fully with authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. The grieving families of the deceased are being offered support as the community processes this calamity.
As investigations continue, airport officials emphasize the importance of ensuring the safety of both passengers and ground personnel in an effort to prevent such devastating occurrences from happening again.
