RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — A tragic multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left four others injured Saturday evening in adverse weather conditions. Preliminary reports from the Arkansas State Police indicated that the accident occurred around 5 p.m. near the 70-mile marker in Johnson County, involving a cattle truck along with six other vehicles.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the deceased, who were traveling in the same vehicle at the time of the crash. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, where significant traffic disruptions ensued as motorists were redirected at the 74 exit onto U.S. 64. The interstate remained closed until approximately 7 a.m. Sunday.
Among the injured were a juvenile driver from a 2019 Nissan and passenger Robert Barr, 50, of Fort Smith. Both were transported to local medical facilities, along with three other drivers: Abu Turay, 54, from Katy, Texas, driving a 2018 Peterbilt, and Simone Nash, 37, from Colorado Springs, whose vehicle details are still being confirmed.
According to preliminary reports, the chaos began as traffic began to slow down in the westbound lanes. A vehicle struck the back of the car occupied by the deceased, triggering a series of collisions. This initial vehicle then collided with Nash’s automobile and a 2020 Kenworth truck.
The resulting momentum caused a chain reaction that pushed Nash’s vehicle into the Nissan, which was subsequently thrust into a 2018 Peterbilt driven by Turay. The volume of accidents revealed the danger of poor visibility and slippery road conditions suggested by the rainy weather.
The first vehicle striking the cruise of Barr’s Nissan also collided with a 2009 Honda before veering off the roadway and overturning in the median. Crews worked diligently on scene to manage the chaos and treat the injured.
Authorities continue to gather details about the incident, emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices, especially during inclement weather. While no additional information was available as of Monday evening, local residents mourn the loss and the emergency responders’ efforts to navigate this tragic situation.
