Police said coworkers and plant medical staff aided the wounded employee before first responders arrived.
ARLINGTON, Texas — A shooting outside the General Motors assembly plant Tuesday morning unfolded during shift change, when police said the employee parking lot was full and workers were leaving for the day.
The shooting left a 24-year-old man critically injured and led to the arrest of 26-year-old Larry Hines. Police said both men worked at the Arlington plant and knew each other before a parking lot argument escalated into gunfire.
Arlington police were called about 6:35 a.m. to the plant in the 2500 block of East Abram Street. Officers found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. Sgt. Richard Coleman said the parking lot was busy because workers were getting ready to go home after their shift.
Police said several coworkers saw the injured man on the ground and began helping him. A police spokesperson later said medical staff connected to the plant were also tending to the victim when first responders arrived. The man was taken to an area hospital. Authorities have not released his name.
Investigators said the shooting followed a verbal argument and a small physical altercation. Police said Hines left the plant after the shooting. While officers were still helping the victim, Hines called 911 from another location and said he was involved in the incident.
Police tracked Hines to an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Viridian Village Drive. He was detained there without further incident, questioned and later charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police said no other people were injured and no property damage was reported.
General Motors said it confirmed a shooting between two employees in the Arlington Assembly Plant parking lot. The company said it was cooperating with police and appreciated law enforcement’s assistance.
Detectives continued interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence Wednesday. Police had not released details about the motive or any additional charges.
