Counterprotester Arrested for Assaulting Pro-Palestinian Protesters at UCLA

Los Angeles, California – A UCLA police arrested a pro-Israeli counterprotester on Thursday morning for allegedly assaulting occupants of a campus protest encampment with a wooden pole. The UCLA Police Department stated that the 18-year-old man, who was not affiliated with the campus, was among a group that carried out a violent attack on students, faculty, and staff during a pro-Palestinian demonstration on April 30. The suspect was identified after detectives interviewed witnesses, victims, and reviewed security camera footage.

The arrest marks the first instance of a counterprotester being apprehended in connection with the campus unrest. The man, identified as Edan On, was taken into custody at a business in Beverly Hills and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently detained at the Los Angeles County jail on a $30,000 bail. On was previously spotted in widely circulated images and videos wearing a white hoodie and mask while striking a pro-Palestinian protester with a pole.

Amid the ongoing investigations, UCLA Police Department emphasized their dedication to identifying and holding accountable all parties involved in acts of violence during the protests and counter-protests held from April 25 to May 2. The campus has experienced escalating tensions related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, leading to clashes between protesters and law enforcement.

Instances of violence involving counterprotesters targeting students and journalists sparked concerns surrounding campus security protocols and law enforcement responses. In response to the incidents, Campus Police Chief John Thomas was relieved of his duties and reassigned, following criticism of security lapses that allowed violence to escalate at a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus. Additionally, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block faced scrutiny from members of Congress regarding his management of complaints regarding antisemitism on campus.

The series of arrests and unrest at UCLA reflect the broader societal divisions and tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict, underscoring the challenges faced by institutions in managing such conflicts within academic settings. As investigations continue and accountability measures are implemented, stakeholders are keen on restoring peace and dialogue on campus.
