Kinsey Chatman died three days after the shooting, and a 16-year-old has since been indicted on murder and robbery charges.
BALTIMORE, Md. — What began as a shooting investigation after a confrontation inside a Southwest Baltimore corner store has become a murder prosecution, with a 16-year-old indicted after 41-year-old Kinsey Chatman died from his injuries.
The case began on the morning of Sept. 2 at a business near North Hilton and Kossuth streets. Police initially reported that Chatman and the teenager had been involved in a physical altercation and that both were shot. Chatman was critically wounded, while the teenager suffered a gunshot wound to his arm. Chatman died Sept. 5, three days after the shooting.
Southwest District officers responded to the 200 block of North Hilton Street at about 10:47 a.m. after a shooting was reported. Police found Chatman wounded and provided aid before he was transported to a hospital. Officers soon located the injured teenager in the surrounding area and also sent him to a hospital.
Police said the confrontation occurred inside the A&Y Corner Store. Charging documents later provided a more detailed account, alleging the teenager approached an ATM and attempted to take Chatman’s backpack from the floor. Authorities allege Chatman entered the store and tried to stop him.
According to the charging documents, the teenager pulled a handgun during the encounter and fired at Chatman. Investigators said the confrontation continued outside the store before the teenager fled. Police recovered a weapon while searching the surrounding area. The allegations in the charging documents remain subject to the court process and have not been proven at trial.
The shooting unfolded near Green Street Academy, putting the police response close to a school campus during the morning. Baltimore City Public Schools said Green Street Elementary School was temporarily placed on lockdown. The school system could not immediately confirm in earlier reporting whether the teenager involved in the shooting was a district student.
Investigators gathered surveillance footage from the store as they worked to identify and locate the teenager. Charging documents say authorities ultimately found him with assistance from a Baltimore County Police helicopter unit. Police initially said the teenager had left the shooting scene but was located quickly.
After his release from the hospital, the teenager was taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility and initially charged with attempted first-degree murder. At that point, Chatman remained critically injured. His death three days after the shooting changed the stakes of the criminal investigation.
A grand jury on Thursday indicted the 16-year-old on charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery in Chatman’s death. The indictment represents the latest stage of a case that moved from a reported fight and double shooting to an attempted murder arrest and, after Chatman’s death, a homicide prosecution.
The case now proceeds through the courts on the murder and robbery charges. Publicly reviewed reports did not identify a trial date or provide the next scheduled court proceeding. The indictment is an accusation, and the charges will have to be established through the judicial process.
