Community Rallies Together to Support Explosion Victims Through Raffle Fundraiser

WOODSFIELD, Ohio — In the wake of a recent explosion at an orphan well site in Washington County, two local residents are rallying their community to support those affected. Madison Morisco and Kaitlin Kinney have launched a raffle fundraiser to assist three Monroe County individuals who sustained injuries during the incident.

The explosion, which occurred in late August, injured six people, including five workers from Monroe Drilling Operations and an inspector from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The crew was engaged in plugging an abandoned well located within Wayne National Forest. Initially treated at Memorial Health System, the injured individuals were subsequently airlifted to specialized medical facilities for further care.

Morisco expressed her motivation for organizing the fundraiser, emphasizing the close-knit nature of the Monroe County community. “When something unfortunate occurs, everyone typically comes together to lend a helping hand,” she noted. Kinney echoed these sentiments, highlighting the local connections, particularly through their children’s school, Beallsville Elementary, where one of the injured workers’ mothers works as a secretary.

“Our motto at school is, ‘Always together is better,’” Kinney said. “It’s encouraging to see our entire district come together to support those in need.” Both women believe that in tough times, the community’s spirit shines brightest, reinforcing their commitment to helping one another.

The raffle tickets are available for purchase at $5 each until October 11. Enthusiasts can expect a variety of prizes, including a gift card tree valued at nearly $600 for the first prize, a YETI tailgate cooler filled with football-themed accessories for second, and gift cards to local businesses for subsequent prizes. Furthermore, a coffee lover’s basket and a smokeless firepit add to the bundle of rewards aimed at enticing local participation.

For those looking to support the cause, Morisco and Kinney may be reached via Facebook or directly by phone at Morisco’s number, 740-213-8296, or Kinney’s at 740-213-3045. Both women expressed their gratitude to the community for its support and encouraged ongoing prayers for the injured workers and their families.

“They’re making progress, so we believe that continued prayers will have a positive impact,” Kinney added. The local response demonstrates how communities can unite in times of crisis, reflecting the deep bonds present among citizens in Monroe County.
