Children, 1 And 2, Dead After Father Found With Gunshot Wound

Deputies said the children’s father was found dead inside the apartment.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Two young children were fatally shot Friday evening at an Orange County apartment complex, where deputies also found their father dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Orange County sheriff’s deputies responded about 6:30 p.m. to the 4400 block of South Rio Grande Avenue after a report of a man with a gun chasing a woman. The woman was found unhurt and told deputies she was worried about her children inside a nearby apartment.

As deputies moved toward the apartment, they heard several gunshots and forced their way inside, the sheriff’s office said. Inside, deputies found two children, ages 1 and 2, with gunshot wounds. Deputies gave aid at the scene before the children were taken to a hospital, where both later died.

The children’s father was found dead in the apartment. Investigators said they believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities did not release the names of the children, the father or the woman Friday night.

Deputies and firefighters filled the area near South Texas Avenue and Rio Grande Avenue as the investigation unfolded. Patrol cars and fire trucks were seen at the complex, and officials said there was no continuing threat to the community.

No additional details were expected Friday night. The sheriff’s office said the investigation remained active, with more information pending from detectives.
