Child Found Burned and Crying After Deadly Wonder Lake Explosion

Two survivors were hospitalized after the Sunday night explosion on Birch Drive.

WONDER LAKE, Ill. — A Sunday night explosion reduced a Wonder Lake home to rubble, killed one person and injured two others, drawing a large fire and emergency medical response to a residential block in McHenry County.

Fire officials said the first call came about 7:50 p.m. for an explosion in the 7400 block of Birch Drive. Crews arrived within minutes and found major structural damage, flames and several victims. One person died at the scene. Two people were taken to hospitals, and one was airlifted because of the severity of the injuries.

The explosion damaged two nearby residences, according to the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District. Firefighters requested mutual aid through a box alarm, bringing more crews and ambulances to the neighborhood. Officials said the fire was contained, but the home was destroyed. The district offered condolences to everyone affected by what it called a tragic event.

Authorities had not publicly identified the person killed as of Monday. They also had not released the conditions of the injured survivors or explained what may have triggered the explosion. The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the ATF joined local fire officials in the investigation, a step often taken when a blast destroys a structure and the cause is not yet clear.

Residents nearby reported hearing a sudden boom before seeing smoke, flames and scattered debris. Some neighbors said they rushed toward the damaged home as emergency crews arrived. The force of the blast left pieces of the structure across the property and damaged surrounding homes. By the next morning, little of the original house remained standing.

The explosion happened in a far northwest suburb about 60 miles from downtown Chicago. Wonder Lake is a McHenry County community of homes, small roads and lakefront areas. The Birch Drive block remained the center of the investigation Monday as officials worked through debris and tried to preserve evidence from the burned and collapsed home.

No charges had been announced Monday, and officials had not said whether investigators believed the blast was accidental. The next steps include identifying the person who died, reviewing damage to neighboring homes, documenting the scene and determining whether gas, appliances, utilities or another source played a role.

As of Monday, May 18, the cause of the Wonder Lake explosion remained unknown, and local, state and federal investigators continued their work at the Birch Drive scene.
