Chaos Erupts in Wellingara as Armed Gangs Terrorize Community, Sparking Calls for Government Action

Wellingara, Gambia — A wave of violence that erupted in the Wellingara community has left residents shaken, stemming from a series of attacks by armed youths on the night of September 7. Eyewitnesses described the chaos as over 50 young men, wielding cutlasses, stones, and other weapons, wreaked havoc in the area, leaving serious injuries and widespread damage in their wake.

A local resident, Musa Minteh, recounted the harrowing ordeal during the attacks. Minteh, who runs a gaming center, tried to shield his customers from harm but was met with aggression as the group vandalized his business, destroying equipment and threatening safety. “They were armed and destructive,” he said, adding that several members of the gang were recognizable to locals.

The violence escalated in the early hours of September 8, with gangs returning to randomly attack residents. Many, including Abdoulie Touray and Lamin Kanyie, sustained injuries during these assaults. The motivation behind the attacks remains uncertain, but residents noted a disturbing pattern of similar incidents emerging over the past year, prompting concerns about inadequate security measures in the area.

In addition to physical assaults, the gang dismantled a community street lighting project aimed at improving safety, leaving large parts of Wellingara in darkness. Damage to vehicles and storefronts further amplified the community’s feeling of vulnerability.

In response to the threats, youths from the community have begun organizing to defend against future attacks, reflecting a growing sense of desperation and resolve among residents. A WhatsApp group has formed, enabling members to share real-time updates and strategies to deal with potential threats. “We can no longer remain passive,” one young resident stated, underscoring the collective determination to protect their neighborhood.

A recent visit to Wellingara revealed that many streetlights were in disrepair, forcing families to endure nights in darkness. Armed with makeshift weapons, young men patrolled the streets, preparing for any return of the attackers. “This situation is untenable,” said community member Saikou Y. Joof, who called for immediate government intervention. “We need police presence now to prevent this from escalating further.”

Local authorities have been informed of the situation, with residents urging the Gambia Police Force to take decisive action. “Every night is a cause for concern,” said Babucarr Gassama. “Our families can’t feel safe, and if help doesn’t come soon, we will have to take matters into our own hands.”

As residents grapple with fear and uncertainty, calls for increased police action grow louder. Community leaders are advocating for swift arrests and long-term solutions to address the root causes of gang violence. As Wellingara faces these ongoing challenges, the message from its residents is clear: they cannot confront this alone, and urgent action is needed to restore safety in their community.
