Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin brought to light troubling claims regarding the high death toll in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump suggested that the war has resulted in the deaths of millions of soldiers, both Russian and Ukrainian. However, the accuracy of these numbers is uncertain due to the lack of transparency from both Russia and Ukraine regarding their military losses and civilian casualties.
Official figures released by Kyiv, the United Nations, and BBC Russia indicate that a total of 147,459 individuals, including soldiers and civilians from both Ukraine and Russia, have lost their lives in the conflict so far. Despite these numbers, it is believed that the actual death toll is much higher than reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that 45,100 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Additionally, there have been 390,000 reported cases of battlefield injuries among Ukrainian troops. The true extent of the casualties, however, may be greater as some soldiers have sustained multiple injuries in separate incidents.
Zelensky’s disclosures concerning the number of casualties do not account for Ukrainian soldiers killed before 2014 when Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began. Estimates from the United Nations suggest that approximately 4,400 Ukrainian soldiers lost their lives during this earlier period of conflict.
In regard to Russian losses, reports indicate that over 850,000 Russian troops have been casualties of the war in Ukraine since February 2022. The figures from Ukraine’s General Staff of Armed Forces do not distinguish between killed, wounded, missing, or captured Russian soldiers.
The ongoing conflict has taken a toll on both sides, with Ukraine declaring that 60,000 of its citizens are missing as a result of the war. The exact number of civilian casualties in Ukraine remains a point of contention, with the U.N. reporting over 12,340 deaths and more than 27,836 injuries attributed to the conflict by the end of 2024. However, these numbers do not include civilians killed in areas of Ukraine still under Russian occupation, where precise figures are difficult to verify.
As the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to escalate, the true extent of the suffering and devastation caused by the conflict remains a critical issue that demands global attention and action.
