Career Criminal Shamar Leggette Dies in Shootout with U.S. Marshals

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rhode Island authorities have confirmed that Shamar Leggette, the man wanted for an armed robbery on Federal Hill last year, was killed in a shootout with U.S. Marshals in New Jersey on Wednesday.

According to 12 News, Leggette, 41, was shot and killed by officers outside a South Brunswick hotel after reportedly opening fire on them while walking out of the building. Providence detectives believe Leggette robbed and shot a man sitting in his parked car on Atwells Avenue back in August.

Additionally, Leggette was wanted for reportedly robbing a Brooklyn bishop at gunpoint during a live-streamed sermon two years ago, and for a deadly shooting outside of a Pennsylvania gentlemen’s club last December. He had a criminal history and was previously convicted of robbing an NBA player outside of a Manhattan restaurant in 2002.

No officers were injured during the shootout, which remains under investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. The incident sparked a significant response from law enforcement and has left authorities piecing together the events that led to the fatal confrontation.

The death of Leggette has raised questions about his criminal history and the wide range of crimes he was allegedly connected to. It has also sparked debate about the use of force by law enforcement in apprehending dangerous suspects.

The South Brunswick shootout serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty and the risks they take to ensure public safety. It also highlights the extensive efforts made by law enforcement agencies to track down and apprehend individuals facing serious criminal charges.
