HAMPTON, Va. – Crime in Hampton is undergoing significant shifts as reported by Police Chief Jimmie Wildman. While homicides have decreased compared to the previous year, burglaries are increasing, posing a new challenge for law enforcement.
Chief Wildman also provided updates on the Wingstop shooting incident, in which an employee was tragically killed. The suspect, a former Wingstop employee, remains at large, with police actively pursuing leads with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals to bring the individual into custody.
In a detailed overview of crime statistics, it was revealed that there were 27 homicide cases in 2023. So far in the current year, three individuals have lost their lives to gun violence. These numbers do not encompass cases of justified homicides where individuals acted in self-defense.
Residents of Hampton are grappling with the devastating impact of teen shootings, with recent incidents leaving the community in shock. Concerns over violent crime and juvenile delinquency have prompted calls for action to address the root causes of such tragedies.

Despite these challenges, Hampton’s overall crime rate remains lower compared to neighboring areas, attributed in part to the strategic placement of surveillance cameras that have proven effective in deterring and solving crimes within the city.
