Burglar Steals Items from Beloved Business Owner’s Store in Wheat Ridge

DUENO, Colo. – Charles Robinson Shay, 39, of Aurora, has been arrested in Jefferson County for a burglary that took place at the same store where Peter Arguello, a well-known Aurora businessman, was killed during a robbery on Nov. 29.

Shay was being tracked by police in connection with a stolen Polestar vehicle, which was spotted outside Peter Damien Fine Jewelry and Antiques around 5 a.m. on Dec. 26, the time of the attempted break-in.

The store had been emptied out after the murder of store owner Peter Arguello. Investigators have been interested in Shay since a crime lab report on Dec. 8 showed that DNA found on restraints used during the killing of Arguello matched Shay’s DNA.

Shay has a criminal record in Colorado for theft, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and DUI. He is now in police custody for aggravated motor vehicle theft and second-degree burglary, but has not been charged in the killing of Peter Arguello.

There is no information on how many people may have been involved in the robbery and murder, but two ball caps, similar to those seen on surveillance video from the store, were found in the back of the burned pickup truck.
