CINCINNATI, Ohio — A new judge will take charge of the case involving seven individuals accused of participating in a violent altercation in downtown Cincinnati. The shift in oversight comes after Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Alison Hatheway recused herself from the case last week, although no reason has been provided for her decision.
The case has been reassigned to Judge Virginia Tallent, who was recently elected and began her six-year term on April 1. The significant brawl, which occurred on July 26, has led to serious legal ramifications for the indicted individuals, all of whom face multiple felony charges.
On August 8, six suspects were indicted, each facing counts of felonious assault, assault, and aggravated riot. Those indicted include Aisha Devaughn, Dominique Kittle, Jermaine Matthews, Montianez Merriweather, Patrick Rosemond, and Dekyra Vernon. A seventh suspect, Gregory Wright, was indicted shortly thereafter for aggravated robbery and aggravated riot.
Wright is reportedly seen in video footage of the incident, allegedly stealing a gold chain from a victim who was already being attacked. After taking the necklace, he continued to film the ongoing brawl, according to police records.
The trial for the suspects is currently scheduled to begin on February 23, though it remains uncertain if Judge Tallent will alter this timeline. Videos of the brutal melee rapidly gained traction online, prompting Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge to describe the event as a “violent attack” during a news conference on August 1. In total, about 100 people were involved in the altercation, resulting in severe injuries to six individuals—five men and one woman—who experienced what Chief Theetge termed “unimaginable physical violence.”
Despite the chaotic nature of the incident, only one person contacted emergency services to report the fight, raising questions about public safety and community response. The repercussions of the attack have ignited discussions on crime and safety in Cincinnati, with additional scrutiny from local and national audiences.
As investigations continue, Cincinnati police noted they are actively pursuing details, and the FBI is also reviewing the incident. The community’s reaction and the ongoing legal proceedings promise to keep this case in the public eye as it unfolds.
