Authorities say an 11-year-old girl was booked on a second-degree murder charge after her teenage brother’s death.
EDMOND, Okla. — Authorities investigating the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old Edmond boy are releasing few details because the person arrested in his death is his 11-year-old sister, placing much of the case within Oklahoma’s protected juvenile justice system.
The girl was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. Sept. 10 and taken to a juvenile detention facility, where Edmond police said she was booked on a second-degree murder charge. Her brother had been fatally shot the previous day. Neither child’s name has been released.
The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office said the girl’s age restricts what information authorities may make public. As a result, officials have not disclosed many of the details that would commonly become available after an adult is arrested in a homicide investigation.
Police were called shortly after 4 p.m. Sept. 9 to a residence in the 1100 block of Lapwing Road following a report of a shooting. Officers found the 15-year-old inside the home. Authorities later announced that his younger sister had been arrested in connection with his death.
Investigators have not publicly said what they believe happened immediately before the shooting or what may have led to it. Police also have not announced a motive, explained how the firearm was obtained or released a detailed account of the evidence that led detectives to arrest the girl.
The limited disclosures reflect the unusual circumstances of a case in which both the person who died and the person accused are children. Police have said they will not release identifying information because juveniles are involved, while prosecutors have pointed to state restrictions governing what can be disclosed about the young suspect.
Emergency communications cited in national reporting provided some additional information about the first response. The children’s mother was not at the residence when the shooting happened and later told investigators that her daughter had called her and said someone had shot her son. Authorities have not released a complete account of that conversation or said how it fits into the investigation.
The girl’s booking on a second-degree murder charge is an allegation and does not establish guilt. Officials have not publicly detailed the next steps in her case, and information about proceedings involving an 11-year-old may remain more restricted than records in a typical adult criminal case.
Edmond police said the family is facing a heartbreaking loss and expressed sympathy as relatives grieve. Investigators have not announced whether anyone else is suspected of involvement or whether additional allegations are under consideration.
The case remained under investigation Friday. Authorities had not released a motive or a detailed sequence of events, leaving the central question of how a shooting inside an Edmond home ended with one sibling dead and another in juvenile custody unresolved publicly.
