Sharell Canty was found dead Sunday morning on Wilkerson Way, police said.
GRAYSON, Ga. — A neighbor’s Sunday morning report of a body inside a Gwinnett County home led police to a fatal shooting investigation and the arrest of a Grayson woman on murder charges.
Gwinnett County police said officers found 44-year-old Sharell Canty dead inside a home on the 300 block of Wilkerson Way in unincorporated Grayson. Investigators later said Canty had been shot and described the case as a domestic-related homicide.
The call came in just before 9 a.m. Sunday. Officers first treated the scene as a death investigation because they had not yet confirmed how Canty died. Sgt. Jennifer Richter said police were trying to “rule out any possibility of any criminal activity” and find out what had happened. After detectives and crime scene investigators worked at the home, police said the case had become a homicide investigation.
Police arrested 48-year-old Stephany Byrom of Grayson. She was charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Authorities have not released a detailed account of the moments before the shooting. They also have not publicly said what the relationship was between Canty and Byrom or what investigators believe caused the violence.
The investigation brought police cars, an ambulance and yellow tape to a normally quiet street. Neighbor Jordyn Stallworth said residents were surprised by the scene. “We were surprised because this area is so small and so quaint and quiet,” Stallworth said. Family members and neighbors gathered nearby as investigators carried equipment into the home.
Police said they believe the shooting was isolated and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. Still, detectives have not closed the case. They are expected to review evidence from the home, interview people connected to Canty and Byrom and prepare reports for the district attorney’s office.
Byrom remained in custody after her arrest, and her mug shot was released this week. No bond had been reported in the case. The next court steps are expected to include an initial appearance and further filings that may outline the evidence behind the charges.
As of Wednesday, police had not announced any additional arrests. The case remains under investigation by Gwinnett County homicide detectives.
