Investigators linked a wounded driver near Broad Street to ballistic evidence and a blood trail found earlier in Tioga.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A late-night crash near Broad and Cayuga streets became the second scene in a North Philadelphia shooting investigation after officers found a critically wounded driver and linked him to gunfire reported minutes earlier on West Westmoreland Street, police said.
The investigation began at about 11:40 p.m. Aug. 28, when Philadelphia police responded to the 2700 block of West Westmoreland Street for a report of a person with a gun. Officers found ballistic evidence and a blood trail at the location but did not initially encounter the shooting victims.
Police secured the West Westmoreland Street location and began investigating. A short time later, authorities received a separate call about a vehicle crash at Broad and Cayuga streets, several blocks from the original scene.
SEPTA Police officers responded to the crash and found a 40-year-old man in the driver’s seat of a 2011 Audi A8L. Police said the man had been shot multiple times. He was taken to Temple University Hospital and was listed in critical but stable condition.
The connection between the locations became clearer after a second wounded man, 42, walked into Temple University Hospital. Police said he told investigators that he and the 40-year-old man had traveled to West Westmoreland Street after receiving a phone call about an altercation there.
The 42-year-old man told investigators that the pair arrived in the Audi and got out before an unknown person opened fire, according to police. The critically wounded man then drove away in the Audi, while the second man escaped the area on foot.
The Audi later became involved in the crash near Broad and Cayuga streets, where the driver was found. The discovery gave investigators a second location connected to the shooting and helped establish how at least one victim moved away from the original scene after the gunfire.
Police have described an argument as the preliminary motive. Authorities have not released details about the nature of that dispute, who was involved in it before the two men arrived or whether investigators have identified the person who fired the shots.
No arrests had been announced as of Sunday. The names of the two wounded men have not been released, and police have not announced criminal charges as the investigation into the shooting and the events leading to the crash continues.
