Bitcoin Mining Operation Uncovered After House Explosion in Malaysia

Bandar Puncak Alam, Malaysia – An explosion in an empty house in Bandar Puncak Alam, Malaysia uncovered an illegal Bitcoin mining operation, shedding light on the ongoing issue of electricity theft associated with cryptocurrency mining in the country.

Reported by local authorities, the explosion, which took place at a residence along Lorong Cekara Purnama, led to the discovery of the illegal activity. Following the incident, fourteen volunteer firefighters were deployed to the scene to extinguish the fire caused by a short-circuited electrical setup in the house.

Sungai Buloh district police chief Supt Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor verified that the fire originated in a room where an illegal Bitcoin mining operation was being powered by an unauthorized electrical connection. Subsequently, authorities seized nine mining rigs, nine blower fans, and a router from the property.

The discovery has prompted an investigation under relevant sections of the Penal Code and the Electricity Supply Act 1990, with authorities urging individuals with information to come forward. This incident is part of a larger trend of illegal Bitcoin mining operations in Malaysia due to the nation’s affordable electricity costs, making it an attractive location for miners seeking to maximize profits.

Lawmakers like Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung are advocating for a dedicated task force to address the issue and ensure fair accountability among property owners, tenants, and electricity suppliers.
