Birthday Turns to Felony Case After Gas Station Gunfire

Newly released video shows gunfire exchanged at a busy fuel station.

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. — Two brothers are facing multiple felony charges after a shootout at a suburban Milwaukee gas station on April 28, where investigators say several shots were fired in a crowded area but no one was struck.

Prosecutors say the case highlights the danger of escalating disputes in public spaces, as surveillance video shows gunfire erupting near fuel pumps with bystanders nearby. Authorities described the outcome as fortunate, noting that multiple people were in close proximity when shots were exchanged.

According to investigators, the incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon at a Woodman’s gas station along Highway 145. A Chevrolet Malibu pulled up next to a Honda Accord at a pump. Authorities say 19-year-old Ralph Stewart was driving, while his brother, 18-year-old Rodrick Stewart, exited the vehicle armed with a handgun. After a brief interaction between the brothers, Ralph repositioned the car, which prosecutors allege was done to facilitate a quick escape.

The brothers then approached the driver of the Honda, leading to a confrontation. Prosecutors say Rodrick Stewart pointed a gun at the man more than once. The victim, who later told police he feared for his life, fired a shot. Rodrick then returned fire, shooting several rounds toward the victim’s vehicle as it left the scene. Authorities said at least three to four shots were fired in total.

Witnesses described chaotic moments as gunfire rang out across the gas station. One woman pumping gas reportedly grabbed her child from a vehicle and forced her to the ground to avoid the gunfire. Officials later emphasized how easily the situation could have turned deadly, given the number of people nearby and the presence of fuel pumps.

Investigators say the victim recognized Ralph Stewart from a previous encounter and told police he had been robbed by him roughly a year earlier during a gambling dispute. While that prior incident may have contributed to tensions, authorities said a clear motive for the shooting has not been fully established.

Police were able to identify the suspects with assistance from their mother, who contacted authorities and encouraged Rodrick Stewart to turn himself in. Both brothers were later taken into custody and formally charged. Rodrick Stewart faces counts including attempted first-degree intentional homicide, while Ralph Stewart is charged as a party to the crime.

Bond for Rodrick Stewart was set at $750,000, while Ralph Stewart’s bond was set at $250,000. Court officials noted the severity of the allegations and the risk posed to the public when determining bail conditions. Both men are expected to appear in court for further proceedings in the coming days.

The shooting occurred on Rodrick Stewart’s 18th birthday. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the brothers knew the victim would be at the gas station that day or if the encounter was coincidental.
