EDMONTON, Alberta — The University of Alberta Golden Bears celebrated a decisive 6-2 victory over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night at Clare Drake Arena, igniting their season with a strong performance in the first period. The Bears, who ended their losing streak with this win, showcased a dominant offensive effort that saw them net five goals within the opening frame.
From the outset, Alberta set a fast pace, with Dylan Ruptash getting things rolling just three minutes into the game. He capitalized on an assist from teammates Ryan Duguay and Jayden Joly, marking his first goal of the season. The Bears quickly built on their lead, with Tyson Laventure scoring on a breakaway shortly afterward to make it 2-0.
The offensive onslaught continued as Adam Hall added a power-play goal, and Gleb Tkach followed suit with another breakaway goal, pushing the scoreline to 4-0. Alex Thacker capped off the first period with a goal that drove Calgary’s starting goaltender, Carl Tetachuk, from the net. The Dinos managed only ten shots in the period, while Alberta’s Ethan Kruger made a clean sweep of each opportunity.
Calgary found some rhythm in the second frame, igniting their spirits with a power-play goal from Jake Poole early on. Assisted by Adam Kydd and Sean Strange, this goal reduced the deficit to 5-1. Despite outshooting Alberta 19-1 in the second period alone, the Dinos struggled to breach Kruger’s defenses, who stood tall in net with a series of impressive saves.
As the final period began, Alberta established further control when Justin Hall scored at 2:31, receiving assistance from Aiden Yakimchuk and team captain Dawson Davidson, who currently leads the nation with 11 assists. Although Calgary’s Gavin Schmidt found the net later in the period to bring the score to 6-2, it was too little, too late for the Dinos, who saw their record slip to 5-2-0.
Throughout the game, 12 different players from Alberta recorded a point, emphasizing the team’s depth and collaborative effort on the ice. The Golden Bears improved their overall record, and they will have a chance to extend their winning streak in a rematch against Calgary on Saturday night.
This matchup not only exemplified the competitive spirit of Canada West hockey but also set the stage for an exciting continuation of the season. Both teams will be eager to fine-tune their strategies ahead of their next faceoff, as fans eagerly anticipate the showdown in Calgary.
