The double homicide happened Wednesday afternoon near McKinney and Courville streets.
DETROIT, Mich. — An infant survived after two adults were fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in parked vehicles on Detroit’s east side, police said, as investigators searched for the gunman.
The shooting happened around 1:49 p.m. near McKinney and Courville streets after police were alerted by ShotSpotter. Investigators said the suspect walked up and fired several shots into two parked vehicles. A man and a woman were killed, and a 1-month-old baby found in one vehicle was not hurt.
Police did not immediately release the victims’ names or say what led to the shooting. No suspect description was made public in the initial report. The case remained under investigation Wednesday night as officers worked to piece together the moments before the gunfire.
The scene drew grieving relatives and neighbors, with people crying and hugging near the investigation area. Pastor Maurice “Pastor Mo” Hardwick, who was taking part in a peace walk with police, said he went to the scene after hearing about the shooting. “Calm down,” Hardwick said, urging an end to retaliation.
Hardwick said the deaths showed the cost of conflicts turning deadly. He said the harm reaches families, children and the wider neighborhood. Police have not said whether the infant was inside either victim’s vehicle when the gunfire began or whether the child witnessed the shooting.
Investigators were expected to keep collecting evidence, reviewing alert data and seeking witnesses. As of the latest update, police had not announced an arrest, and the suspect remained at large.
