An arrest affidavit says gunfire followed a late-night confrontation outside a Buckner Boulevard 7-Eleven.
DALLAS, Texas — A pregnant woman’s baby died after a shooting that began with a gas station dispute and ended with two suspects crashing during a police chase, Dallas authorities said.
The shooting happened early May 3 after an altercation at a 7-Eleven at 4710 S. Buckner Boulevard. Police said Keyner Ariel Calero Jiron, 20, and Yeremy Alexander Zapata Aleman, 17, later followed the victims’ vehicle and fired at it as it traveled along Buckner Boulevard.
Officers responded about 12:40 a.m. to Wimbelton Way after victims flagged down police. Inside a red GMC Acadia, officers found a man, a juvenile and a pregnant woman who had been shot. The woman was taken to a hospital, where doctors performed emergency treatment. Police said the baby had also been struck by gunfire and died from the injuries.
The affidavit says the conflict started as the driver of the victims’ vehicle left the store. He and Calero Jiron had a physical confrontation, then exchanged words after the driver returned to the Acadia. A juvenile witness told police she saw a green laser from the suspects’ vehicle before shots were fired.
Investigators said surveillance video helped trace the shooting from the gas station onto Buckner Boulevard. The victims drove north, and the suspects followed. A second vehicle traveling south was also hit by bullets, but that driver was not injured. Police have not said whether the pregnant woman was the intended target.
Hours later, officers identified the suspects’ vehicle and tried to stop it. Police said Calero Jiron sped away, ran red lights and got away near Peak Street and Worth Street. Officers later found the vehicle on Chariot Drive. The vehicle fled again and crashed into a curb in the 5000 block of Buckner Boulevard.
After the arrest, police said they found cocaine in Calero Jiron’s pockets and MDMA near the passenger side where Zapata Aleman had been sitting. Both suspects were charged with capital murder because of the baby’s death. They also face aggravated assault and drug charges, and Calero Jiron faces evading arrest and weapon charges.
The case has shaken people living near the shooting scene. Jennifer Lacy told a local reporter she heard screaming after the gunfire and realized someone had been shot. Another neighbor, Gloria Boyce, said the violence has changed daily life in the area and left residents worried about going outside at night.
Police said the case remains under investigation. Court records and future hearings are expected to show whether prosecutors add or change charges as detectives review video, witness statements and forensic evidence.
