This incident highlights an urgent trend, as Europe has witnessed numerous avalanche-related fatalities this winter, resulting in 88 deaths across the continent so far.
Just last week, Italy reported its highest mountain mortality rate in years, with 13 individuals losing their lives, ten of whom perished in avalanches. In neighboring Switzerland, an avalanche caused a train derailment in the Valais region, injuring five passengers. Similarly, the French Alps have recorded at least 27 deaths this season, including three British skiers who died in just the past week, marking the most fatal winter since the 2020-2021 season.
As dangerous weather conditions persist across Europe, snow forecaster Aineva reported a critical avalanche risk level of 4 out of 5 in the Italian Alps, underscoring growing concerns among officials and outdoor enthusiasts. The high alert extends throughout much of the Swiss Alps, where researchers have documented an alarming increase in incidents this season.
Experts attribute the surge in avalanches to a combination of unstable snowpack conditions and climatic changes. Leading avalanche specialist Henry Schniewind noted that this year has produced exceptionally volatile snowfall, creating layers of fragile snow prone to collapse. Such instability is often exacerbated by an increase in off-piste skiing, where thrill-seeking winter sports enthusiasts venture into riskier terrain.
Research indicates that while global warming generally suggests reduced snowfall, higher elevations—often seen in popular ski destinations—may experience increased precipitation and contribute to more frequent and severe avalanche occurrences. At elevations above 2,000 meters, wetter avalanches can be particularly dangerous due to their denser composition, which exerts greater pressure upon release.
Tragically, recent avalanches have claimed lives despite forewarnings. The day before three skiers died near Val d’Isère, a French ski resort heavily reliant on high-altitude slopes, authorities issued a red avalanche alert. Projections indicate that climate change will likely exacerbate these hazardous conditions, making the slopes even more unpredictable.
Tourists are increasingly drawn to off-piste skiing, often disregarding warnings due to a false sense of security when conditions appear calm. Estimates suggest that 90 to 95 percent of avalanche victims either trigger the avalanche themselves or are caught in it due to someone in their group. While some individuals may ski without incident for years, this season’s underlying environmental changes have made many slopes more perilous than in the past.
