Autopsy Report Confirms Fatal Gunshot to Head in Tragic Sonya Massey Case

Springfield, Illinois – An autopsy report released on Friday revealed disturbing details about the shooting death of Sonya Massey, the Illinois woman fatally shot by a deputy after seeking help. The report confirmed that Massey’s death was caused by a gunshot wound to the head, which tragically ended her life in a harrowing manner.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon disclosed that the bullet entered Massey beneath her left eye and exited on the posterior left side of her upper neck. The shot caused a perforation to her left internal carotid artery, a skull fracture, and hemorrhages. Additionally, the report noted Massey had minor blunt force injuries to her right leg and weighed 112 pounds.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump emphasized the significance of the autopsy findings during a news conference following the report’s release. He highlighted the downward trajectory of the deputy’s shot, which was captured on video as Massey pleaded for mercy, creating a stark image of excessive force in the tragic incident.

Massey had called 911 in the early morning hours of July 6 to report a possible intruder. The situation quickly escalated as Deputy Sean Grayson fired three shots at Massey, with one proving to be fatal as she stood working with a boiling pot of water in her own home.

Following the incident, Grayson was terminated from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. The Department of Justice is monitoring the case closely, as Massey’s family and community demand accountability and justice for her untimely death.

As loved ones mourn the loss of Massey and seek answers, they highlight her struggles with mental health issues leading up to her death. Calls for Sheriff Jack Campbell’s resignation and a deeper investigation into law enforcement practices have gained momentum, with Vice President Kamala Harris also engaging with Massey’s family members to offer support and condolences.

In the wake of Massey’s tragic death, a GoFundMe account has exceeded its initial goal, raising funds to assist the family with various expenses. A Change.org petition urging for accountability and reforms within the Sheriff’s Department has garnered significant support, reflecting a community seeking justice and transparency in the face of a devastating loss.
