Auckland Actress Awa Puna Leads Transgender Rights March Amidst Violent Confrontations

Auckland, New Zealand – Actress Awa Puna found herself in a moment of pure pride as she led a large transgender rights march through the streets of Auckland last year. The Shortland Street star stood alongside thousands of supporters, but the event took a violent turn when a group of Destiny Church members opposed their presence.

The protest was directed at British anti-trans activist Posie Parker, who had arrived in New Zealand for a tour. Awa and her partner, Mark Chayanat Whittet, intended to make their voices heard, but they were met with aggression and even violence. Awa vividly recalls being attacked and spat on during the event, leaving her feeling vulnerable and depressed in the aftermath.

Despite the harrowing experience, Awa found solace in the support of her family, friends, and her partner Mark. The couple met in 2018 and, after a period of uncertainty, they reconnected and now live together in Auckland. Awa credits Mark with bringing joy and laughter into her life, allowing her to embrace her trans identity and deserving of love.

With a focus on storytelling and representation, Awa continues to make an impact in the film industry. She is currently working on a short film called The Nephilim, which explores the story of a young, Christian Māori boy infiltrating the queer ballroom community. Additionally, her short film Tūī will be featured at the Māoriland Film Festival next month.

One of Awa’s most cherished projects has been her involvement in the TVNZ+ series, The Boy, The Queen And Everything In Between. Set in Auckland’s K Road in the ’90s, the show holds personal significance for Awa, who plays the role of Jacob’s love interest, Hope. The series is not only a creative endeavor for Awa, but also serves as a platform for authentic trans representation and storytelling.

Awa’s journey as an actress, advocate, and filmmaker reflects her resilience and determination to bring visibility and understanding to the transgender community. With her unwavering commitment to authentic storytelling and representation, Awa continues to inspire and uplift others in her community.
