Nashville, Tennessee — A man with a substantial criminal record is now facing serious charges following an alleged assault on a woman after she returned home from a concert. Joequarius Williams, 29, who is currently on probation for earlier convictions, was arrested for reportedly attacking a 25-year-old woman inside her Germantown apartment building.
Metro Nashville Police have stated that Williams followed the victim from the Sabrina Carpenter concert at Bridgestone Arena to her residence last week. Upon entering the apartment complex, he allegedly confronted her in the elevator, threatened her life, and began to strangle her. Although the victim briefly lost consciousness during the attack, she was able to escape and seek help.
Investigators utilized fingerprint evidence collected at the scene to identify Williams as the suspect. His bond has been set at $10.1 million, marking one of the highest amounts in Davidson County this year.
Court documents reveal that Williams has a long history of violent offenses, including robbery and sexual battery. In 2019, he was charged with attempted rape but ultimately pleaded guilty to lesser charges, resulting in a six-year stint in jail followed by probation.
Officials from the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office indicated they will review the circumstances surrounding Williams’ continued probation status. They noted that the guidelines for sentencing are established by the state legislature, raising questions about how repeat offenders are managed in the justice system.
Local leaders are expressing alarm over the incident. Germantown Councilmember Jacob Kupin noted the importance of ensuring community safety, stating that people should feel secure returning home after attending events. He emphasized that this incident underscores the need for ongoing efforts to combat crime in Nashville, which aims to maintain its reputation as a safe city.
Residents in the area have shared their concerns about personal safety following the attack. Olivia Pfender, a local resident, voiced her anxiety about the incident, highlighting the pervasive fear women face regarding their safety in everyday situations.
Williams is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, where new charges will be addressed, and additional probation violation warrants are anticipated to follow. As the community grapples with this unsettling incident, discussions about public safety and the handling of violent offenders are expected to intensify.
