MAUI, Hawaii — A man was arrested after allegedly attacking another individual with an aluminum bat in a parking lot incident outside a Target store. The assault, which took place last week, has left the victim with significant injuries.
The confrontation happened on a Friday evening around 8 p.m. as the victim was leaving Target with his girlfriend, Kiana Bascon, and her five-year-old daughter. According to Bascon, they were approached by a man who appeared agitated and brandishing a bat. She described the suspect as having an aggressive demeanor, claiming he shouted that they had killed his father while advancing toward them.
In a bid to protect her daughter, Bascon quickly sought refuge in their vehicle. During this distraction, the man allegedly turned his rage toward her boyfriend. A bystander recalled witnessing the attack, saying they saw the assailant striking the victim repeatedly with the bat in a fast and violent manner.
Law enforcement later identified the attacker as 32-year-old Gabriel Pangkee, who has a criminal history that includes multiple convictions. He has since been arrested and is facing charges including assault and damage to property.
The victim reportedly sustained serious injuries to his head and hands from the blows, which may require surgical intervention. Expressing concern over medical expenses, his girlfriend highlighted the impact of the injuries on his ability to work and maintain daily activities.
In the wake of the incident, Bascon has called on Target to enhance security measures at their location. She believes the store should take accountability for the events that unfolded on their premises.
Target released a statement expressing concern for the victim and his family, emphasizing that guest safety remains a top priority. They confirmed cooperation with local authorities in the ongoing investigation.
Pangkee is scheduled to appear in court on January 13, as the community remains unsettled by the violent outbreak in a public space. Authorities continue to stress the importance of safety at local businesses while the victim’s family navigates the aftermath of this shocking event.
