Miami Beach, Fla. — Newly released police body camera footage and photographs from the crime scene detail the chaotic aftermath of a violent assault at a bus stop that left a 72-year-old man with severe injuries. The incident occurred on Sept. 23, 2024, when Luciano Lastra was attacked shortly after exiting a Miami-Dade Transit bus.
Witness reports reveal that Lastra had been targeted by 26-year-old Gianni D’Angelo McIntosh Jones during the bus ride. As Lastra tried to distance himself by getting off the bus, McIntosh Jones followed him, leading to a brutal confrontation near Alton Road and Fifth Street.
In the police video, officers can be seen gathering information from witnesses as they search for the suspect. “Where’s the person that’s involved?” one officer asks. A witness confirmed that Lastra was simply trying to avoid conflict. “The old man didn’t want any trouble, so he got off at the stop. This man followed him out,” the witness reported, describing the scene that escalated to violence.
Witnesses indicated that the assault was particularly brutal. One bystander noted, “Even when he was on the ground, the younger man started stomping on him.” Lastra later stated that he attempted to defend himself with a knife but was overpowered, resulting in significant injuries, including a gash to his leg.
Lastra, who spent five days in the hospital recovering, recounted the attack. “He was looking at me in an evil way,” he explained, recalling the suspect’s menacing demeanor before the assault began. Police were able to apprehend McIntosh Jones shortly after the incident. When questioned about his actions, he denied fleeing the scene, saying, “I didn’t run away; I walked away.”
Amidst his arrest, McIntosh Jones maintained that he was not armed, claiming that the knife belonged to Lastra. However, he later admitted to injuring Lastra, acknowledging his role in the attack. “For sure, this person is dangerous,” Lastra remarked, highlighting concerns about public safety following the violent incident.
As authorities processed McIntosh Jones, court records indicate that his criminal case has since been closed. Inquiries made to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office regarding the circumstances surrounding the case have yet to yield a response.
This incident has sparked discussions about safety in public transportation settings and the protective measures in place for vulnerable passengers. As the community grapples with the implications of such violence, Lastra’s experience serves as a harrowing reminder of the potential dangers faced by elderly individuals in public spaces.
