Arrests Made in Violent North Carolina Home Invasion Involving Illegal Immigrants

Greenville, North Carolina — Two men are facing multiple serious charges following a violent home invasion that left a victim hospitalized. The incident, which reportedly took place early Wednesday morning, has resulted in shock within the local community due to its severity.

Authorities responded to an assault call shortly after 3 a.m. on February 11. Upon arrival at a residence in the Cherry Oaks neighborhood, deputies determined an unlawful entry had occurred, leading to an immediate investigation. The suspects, identified as 20-year-old Jonathan David Garcia-Lario and 21-year-old Zaid Mayen, were apprehended two days later.

Investigators discovered both suspects were in the country illegally. Subsequent inquiries led authorities to an apartment in Chapel Hill, approximately two hours from the crime scene, where relevant evidence was collected. This investigation has prompted serious charges against Garcia-Lario and Mayen, which include first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, a forcible sex offense, and assault with a deadly weapon.

The extent of the victim’s injuries has not been fully disclosed. However, they were transported to a local hospital for treatment, which has raised concerns about the severity of the attack. Local law enforcement has emphasized the alarming nature of the crime, prompting detectives from specialized units like Major Crimes and Forensic Services to take part in the investigation.

After their arrests, the suspects were held without bond. Garcia-Lario was first taken to the Franklin County Detention Center before being transferred to Pitt County Detention Center, where he remains. In contrast, Mayen was booked in the Orange County Detention Center. Authorities have also notified the Department of Homeland Security, anticipating that Immigration and Customs Enforcement may become involved due to the suspects’ immigration status.

The U.S. Marshals Service aided local law enforcement in executing the arrests, underscoring the collaborative effort to tackle serious crimes in the region. The event has sparked discussions in the community regarding safety and the prevalence of crime, particularly in suburban areas that often feel insulated from such incidents.

As investigations continue, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected nature of crime, even in areas where residents typically feel secure.
