Arrested: Man in 30s Charged in Violent County Longford Assault Case

LONGFORD, Ireland – A man in his 30s has been taken into custody and is facing charges in connection with a brutal assault on a woman in County Longford last year. The attack occurred at the Mall in Longford town around 2:30am on August 7th. The victim, a woman in her 50s, suffered serious facial injuries and received medical treatment at Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital.

Police believe the woman was confronted and punched multiple times in the face during the early morning hours in The Albert Reynolds Peace Park. After the attack, the woman managed to escape by running towards the park’s main gate and raising the alarm.

Gardaí, the police force in Ireland, had previously made public appeals for witnesses with a spokesperson stating, “Gardaí arrested a male in his 30s as part of this investigation. He subsequently appeared before Athlone District Court on 3rd January 2024.” Last September, Gardaí released an ‘Evofit’ of the suspect and appealed for anyone with dash cam footage of the area to come forward.

The victim’s bravery and the community’s support have been crucial in bringing the suspect to justice. It is essential for people to feel safe and know that law enforcement agencies will do everything in their power to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

This arrest brings a sense of closure to the victim and her community, and serves as a reminder that acts of violence will not be tolerated. The judicial process will hopefully bring justice for the victim and provide a reassurance to the local residents.
