BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A serious car accident in northeast Bexar County left six children injured on Friday, leading to the arrest of a 31-year-old woman who now faces multiple charges. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office reported that Brittany Winston was taken into custody shortly after the collision, which occurred just before 2 p.m. on Binz Engleman Road.
Authorities indicated that Winston has been charged with 14 offenses, including two counts of intoxication assault and multiple counts of injury to a child and aggravated assault. According to the sheriff’s office, she was driving a Ford Explorer when the vehicle left the roadway, crashed into a pole, and came to a halt on the sidewalk.
Deputies arrived on the scene to find the Explorer heavily damaged and various children injured both inside and outside the vehicle. Investigators noted that Winston was speeding at the time of the incident, traveling more than 20 mph over the posted limit of 45 mph. Furthermore, it was reported that none of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seat belts.
The injured children, ranging in age from 2 to 12, were quickly transported to local hospitals. Among them, an 11-year-old girl was listed in critical condition, while two 12-year-old girls were described as being in serious but stable condition. Three boys, aged 2, 4, and 7, suffered injuries classified as non-life-threatening. Notably, the 4-year-old boy has since been treated and released to his family.
While being treated at the hospital, Winston allegedly exhibited signs of intoxication. Subsequent tests confirmed a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit, and she also tested positive for a controlled substance. The sheriff’s office has notified Child Protective Services, which is now involved in the ongoing investigation.
