Arrest of Twelve Suspects Linked to Violent Assault on Unity Estate Shakes Port Harcourt Community

Port Harcourt, Nigeria—Police in Rivers State have apprehended a dozen individuals following a violent assault on Unity Estate in the Mbodo-Aluu area. The attack occurred on January 5, 2025, and has raised concerns over emerging security threats in the region.

According to a statement from the Rivers State Police Command, approximately 1:15 p.m. the day of the incident, a group suspected to be members of the OSPAC vigilante organization and armed thugs invaded the estate, wielding pump-action guns, cutlasses, and other dangerous weapons. The confrontation reportedly escalated quickly, leading to chaos and injuries among residents.

The police statement detailed that preliminary investigations suggest the assault was organized by two men, Patrick Akandu and Omakwelem Onu Ihunwo Prince, who remain at large. Witnesses reported that the attackers caused significant damage to property while indiscriminately firing their weapons, leaving one resident, Apostle Stephen Nmacha, with a severe gunshot wound to the leg. Others injured during the attack fled into nearby bushes seeking safety, highlighting the intensity of the situation.

Responding to emergency reports, officers from the Choba Division, aided by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and Octopus Tactical Team, arrived on the scene promptly. Their swift action led to the rescue of Nmacha, who was subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment. The police also recovered various items during the operation, including an automatic pump-action gun, live cartridges, and multiple motorcycles among other exhibits.

The twelve suspects taken into custody range in age and background, with captures reflecting a wide geographical array within Rivers State. They include Chinedu Nnodim, 45, from Etche, and Joel Wopara, 49, from Rukpokwu, among others. Despite this significant breakthrough, the commander of the Akpor OSPAC, known as Azubuike or “Ocean,” remains unaccounted for.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, condemned the actions of the vigilante group, emphasizing that such measures undermine public safety and order. He underscored the necessity for OSPAC members to act under police supervision and to work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies.

The police have assured the community that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all suspects involved in the attack. Adepoju stressed that law enforcement will remain vigilant against any individuals or organizations attempting to disrupt peace in the state.

Authorities are encouraging residents to share any credible information that could assist in capturing the remaining suspects and to report any suspected illegal activities to local police stations. The ongoing situation serves as a critical reminder of the need for cohesive security strategies to protect the community effectively.
