Arrest Made in Murder of Jacksonville Teen Killed in December Shooting

Jacksonville, Florida – Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy in Mandarin in December 2023, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Colton Moore, who was already under arrest for unrelated offenses, is now facing murder charges in the death of Derek Pitts, the 16-year-old victim of the shooting incident that took place in the parking lot of the Coopers Hawk Apartment homes on Old St Augustine Road.

Pitts, described by his aunt as having a vibrant spirit, was an avid Philadelphia sports fan who loved baseball, football, cars, driving around, and shopping with his sister. Known for his sense of humor and desire to make others laugh, Pitts tragically lost his life in the senseless violence that occurred that night.

According to law enforcement officials, a large gathering that originated at a different location eventually moved to the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. A dispute between two groups escalated into violence, resulting in gunfire that claimed Pitts’ life.

A total of at least 10 shots were fired during the altercation, with Pitts being struck by one fatal bullet. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

In the course of the homicide investigation, authorities received multiple tips from First Coast Crime Stoppers, which played a crucial role in identifying Moore as the prime suspect in the case. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and the community led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, bringing a measure of justice to Pitts’ family and loved ones.
