Arrest Made in Homicide Case Involving “Illegal Alien” Suspect

Hamilton, Ohio – The victim killed in a tragic incident involving an individual described as an “illegal alien” has been identified as Fernando Reyna Oviedo, 41, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office. Oviedo succumbed to a gunshot wound on April 1 in the 1100 block of S. 13th Street.

Authorities are still searching for Oviedo’s family, urging anyone with information to contact the coroner’s office at 513-785-5860. Two days following Oviedo’s death, Hamilton police made an arrest in the case, detaining 46-year-old Fermin Garcia-Gutierrez, who now faces charges of aggravated murder and other offenses.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones shed light on Garcia-Gutierrez’s extensive history, revealing that he has been deported seven times and has utilized multiple aliases and birthdates during his stays in jail. The sheriff expressed concerns about border security and the repeated incarceration of individuals with similar profiles.

Sheriff Jones highlighted the alarming rate at which the county jails have been housing individuals like Garcia-Gutierrez, emphasizing the impact of illegal immigration on community safety. In response, the Ohio Immigration Alliance pointed out that immigrants tend to have lower crime rates compared to native-born individuals, citing various studies to support their claim.

Hamilton police confirmed that Garcia-Gutierrez is the sole suspect in Oviedo’s murder and that they are not pursuing any other leads. The case serves as a reminder of the complex issues surrounding immigration and law enforcement, prompting discussions on how to address such challenges effectively to ensure community well-being.
