Arrest Made in Connection to Fatal 2023 Shooting in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, Utah – A 23-year-old man has been arrested by the Salt Lake City Police Department in connection to the 2023 shooting that tragically claimed the life of 22-year-old Halapaini Moala. Molitoni Vainuku was taken into custody and booked on one count of murder in the Salt Lake County Metro Jail, according to authorities.

The arrest took place following extensive investigations by the SLCPD Gang Unit, with crucial information leading to Vainuku’s location in West Valley City on March 22. Working in collaboration with the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and SWAT, law enforcement authorities were able to safely apprehend Vainuku who was believed to have access to firearms.

The case dates back to June 4, 2023, when reports of a shooting on West Market Street prompted a response from law enforcement. Upon arrival, officers discovered Moala on the ground in a parking lot, where sadly, he succumbed to his injuries. The Gang Unit and Homicide Squad of the SLCPD initiated efforts to identify the perpetrator and subsequently launched crime suppression patrols to deter further violence.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown commended the dedication and diligence of the investigative teams involved, underscoring the significance of the arrest in enhancing public safety within the community.
