Ammonia Leak from Deadly Teutopolis Crash Evacuates Hundreds of Residents

TEUTOPOLIS, Ill. (AP) — Residents of Teutopolis, Illinois, were allowed to return to their homes after a truck carrying toxic substances overturned, causing a major accident on Friday. Five individuals tragically lost their lives, and several others suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash. The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 40, approximately a half-mile east of Teutopolis.

The victims, who succumbed to exposure to anhydrous ammonia at the scene, were identified by Effingham County Coroner Kim Whodes. The crash also led to the evacuation of area residents, as the plume from the ammonia leak prompted authorities to order an evacuation within an approximate one-mile radius of the crash, including northeastern parts of Teutopolis.

Effingham Fire Chief Brant Yochum stated that the semi-truck was carrying approximately 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia at the time of the accident, with early estimates indicating that about 4,000 gallons were released before the leak was partially patched. The incident prompted the evacuation of approximately 500 individuals from the area due to the ammonia leak.

In response to the crash, local, state, and federal agencies were involved in emergency response efforts to contain the leak. The National Transportation Safety Board is reviewing the incident, while the Illinois State Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, including performing traffic crash reconstruction.

The crash has raised concerns among local leaders, with Illinois State Representative Adam Neimerg expressing his belief that the tragedy could have been prevented. Neimerg highlighted ongoing issues with accidents on I-70, which led to traffic being routed through Teutopolis, resulting in safety concerns among residents.

As the investigation into the crash continues, efforts are being made by the Illinois EPA to address any contamination resulting from the incident, and authorities are working to ensure the safe return of residents to the affected areas. Despite the devastation caused by the crash, it is clear that the community is coming together to support those affected by this tragic event.
