Alleged Burglar Shot Dead After Returning to Same Houston Home

The case centers on a neighborhood chase, a surveillance alert and a suspect who fled.

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police were investigating Friday after a burglary report in Alief led to a neighborhood chase and a fatal shooting near Cinnabar Drive and High Star Drive.

The case began with an attempted break-in on Bandlon Drive and ended with one suspect dead, another gone and two brothers questioned after they confronted the suspects, police said. No charges had been filed by Friday night, but police said the case would likely go to a grand jury.

Police said the suspects first came to the home earlier Friday and left before officers got there. Later, the homeowner saw them return on a surveillance system and contacted a neighbor. Lt. Larry Crowson said the neighbor and his brother then went outside and began following the suspects in a vehicle. The pursuit ended nearby, where police said a confrontation took place.

One suspect was shot during that encounter, then went over a fence, Crowson said. Officers later found him dead on the other side. The second suspect escaped and remained wanted. Police had not released the dead suspect’s identity, a motive for the break-in or a list of items believed to have been taken.

Video from the scene showed two men near a vehicle after the shooting. Rambelto Medrano said he recognized his sons’ vehicle in the footage and received a call while the incident was unfolding. “I tried to call them and nobody answers,” Medrano said. He said he was not at the home during the confrontation.

The shooting added a legal review to what began as a burglary call. Police said detectives would collect video, interview witnesses and prepare the case for prosecutors. A grand jury can decide whether the evidence supports charges or no charge in connection with the shooting.

As of Friday night, police had not announced an arrest in the search for the second suspect. The investigation remained active, and officials had not set a public date for the grand jury presentation.
