Alameda Beach Takeover Ends With Two People Shot

Two people were hospitalized after gunfire near Crown Memorial State Beach.

ALAMEDA, Calif. — A double shooting near Crown Memorial State Beach on Thursday night renewed pressure on Alameda officials to address large youth gatherings that residents say have disrupted the city’s south shore.

Authorities said the shooting was reported around 9 p.m. near Park Street and Shoreline Drive. Two victims were taken to hospitals, but police had not released their conditions by Sunday. Investigators said they were working several leads.

The gunfire came during the latest gathering known locally as a “beach takeover,” where teens and young adults gather in large numbers near Crown Beach and South Shore Center. Alameda police and East Bay Regional Park District police responded to the scene. Officers later declared an unlawful assembly and ordered people to leave.

A nearby resident told KTVU the shots came fast and were followed by sirens from several directions. “I waited for a second, and that’s when I heard all the sirens and I knew something had happened,” she said. The resident said the response lasted about 10 minutes as emergency vehicles moved toward the beach area.

Officials have linked earlier beach takeovers to underage drinking, fights and disturbances near nearby businesses. Some shops have closed early during past gatherings. Police have also handled incidents involving pepper spray, a Taser and a fight tied to a water-gun game.

Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft said the city is looking at accountability for people involved in the disorder. “We are looking to hold responsible parties liable,” she said, adding that could include juveniles and parents. Ashcraft said the beach remains a public space, but city leaders want the gatherings to stay peaceful.

Police had not said whether the shooting involved people from the gathering or someone who arrived afterward. They also had not released suspect descriptions, the number of shots fired or whether surveillance video helped identify anyone. The lack of public details left residents waiting for answers about what sparked the violence.

Crown Beach sits along Alameda’s west and south shoreline and is managed by the East Bay Regional Park District. Its location near homes, roads and South Shore Center has made large gatherings highly visible to residents and business owners.

As of Sunday, police had announced no arrests. The next step is the continued review of witness statements, video and physical evidence from the area.
