Accra-Kumasi Highway Tragedy: Fatal Bus Crash Leaves Multiple Dead and Injured

Accra, Ghana – A tragic road accident on the Accra to Kumasi highway has claimed multiple lives and left several others injured after a red Scania Marcopolo bus collided with a truck in the early hours of Friday morning. The incident occurred at Atwemamena, a community in the Eastern Region of Ghana between Bunso and Akyem Asafo.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the aftermath of the crash as severe, with several passengers, including the bus driver and mate, losing their lives. The victims were rushed to Suhum Government Hospital for urgent medical attention. This devastating accident adds to a troubling pattern of road crashes in Ghana, where such incidents are unfortunately all too common.

In the first quarter of this year alone, Ghana recorded 4,503 road accidents, resulting in 829 deaths and 4,955 injuries. The Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG) has emphasized the need for the government to implement comprehensive trauma care systems and enforce stricter road safety measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

During its 4th Annual General and Scientific Conference in Kwahu on May 16, the OAG highlighted the importance of timely and effective treatment for trauma patients, as well as the enforcement of road traffic laws, promotion of helmet and seat belt usage, and improvements in road infrastructure to enhance safety for all road users. The conference underscored the urgency of addressing these issues to reduce the incidence of road accidents in the country.

The community of Atwemamena is now in mourning as they come to terms with the loss of life caused by this fatal crash. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the collision, as efforts are made to ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future. Road safety continues to be a critical concern in Ghana, with calls for greater attention to be paid to measures that can protect the lives of those traveling on the country’s highways.

As families and loved ones of the victims grieve their loss, the nation awaits further updates on the investigation into the accident and the implementation of measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring. The impact of this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for continuous efforts to improve conditions for all road users in Ghana.
