Accidents on I-79 Lead to Closure in Monongalia County, Resulting in Tragic Fatalities

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A series of accidents led to the closure of Interstate 79 southbound in Monongalia County, resulting in a fatal outcome for one driver on Tuesday morning. The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident involving a Ford Escort, a Mack truck, and a West Virginia Courtesy Patrol Vehicle near the Westover interchange around 6:15 a.m.

According to preliminary reports, the sedan lost control on a bridge and was subsequently hit by the Mack truck, resulting in the death of the sedan’s driver. Fortunately, neither the Mack truck driver nor the Courtesy Patrol Officer sustained any injuries in the collision. The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an investigation into the incident and has refrained from releasing any names at this time.

In an update around 11:08 a.m., the closure on I-79 has been lifted, as reported by WV511.org. The closure, which had initially caused significant traffic congestion in the area, has since been resolved.

Earlier in the day, reports of multiple accidents on Interstate 79 in Monongalia County prompted the closure of the southbound lanes. The Monongalia County Emergency Management Agency advised that I-79 S was closed on the Uffington Bridge at mile marker 149.5, with slippery road conditions posing risks for drivers. The closure was affecting traffic from Goshen Road to the Star City exit.

Additionally, WV511.org highlighted the closure on I-79 and indicated slow-moving traffic throughout Monongalia County. Drivers were urged to check traffic conditions before embarking on their journeys to avoid any disruptions or delays.
