84-Year-Old Man With Dementia Opened Fire on His Son at Home

Deputies had responded several times to the home before gunfire erupted Friday.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A shooting inside a Kissimmee home Friday left a man hospitalized and his elderly father in custody, after deputies say repeated domestic disputes between the pair escalated into violence.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a home on Westmoreland Circle around 12:40 p.m. after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a man in his 50s with a gunshot wound. The victim was airlifted to a hospital for emergency surgery, and his condition has not been publicly updated.

Authorities identified the suspect as 84-year-old Billy Leroy Barr, who lived in the home with his son. Deputies said Barr has been diagnosed with dementia and was taken into custody at the scene. He was later charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, along with other firearm-related offenses. Investigators have not disclosed what sparked the shooting, and it remains unclear whether any confrontation immediately preceded the gunfire.

What investigators have confirmed is a recent pattern of conflict inside the home. Deputies had responded to the same address three times in the 10 days leading up to the shooting, each time for verbal altercations between the father and son. Those incidents did not result in arrests, but they established a history of escalating tension that authorities are now examining closely.

Law enforcement officials said detectives are working to piece together a timeline of events leading up to the shooting, including reviewing prior calls for service and interviewing neighbors and potential witnesses. Officials have not said whether any prior reports involved threats or physical violence, and details about what occurred in the moments before the shooting remain under investigation.

Neighbors described the incident as shocking for the typically quiet area. Residents reported seeing a large police presence and emergency responders arriving quickly after the call. Some expressed sympathy for the family, noting the added strain that can come with caring for a loved one with cognitive decline.

The case also raises procedural questions about how repeated domestic calls are handled when no charges are filed. Authorities have not indicated whether any additional interventions were considered during earlier visits to the home or whether warning signs were identified at the time.

Officials said Barr remains in custody as the investigation continues. Detectives are expected to review medical and mental health factors as part of the case, along with physical evidence collected at the scene. Prosecutors will ultimately determine how the case proceeds.

The victim’s condition remains unknown, and authorities have not released his identity. The sheriff’s office said updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
