4-Year-Old Girl, Grandmother Killed in Largo Mobile Home Fire

Investigators are reviewing what caused the deadly blaze on Belcher Road South.

LARGO, Fla. — Two people, including a 4-year-old girl, were killed Monday when a fire broke out inside a mobile home at Westgate Mobile Home Park, Largo Fire Rescue said.

The fire was reported about 2:20 a.m. May 11 at 14099 Belcher Road South. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming from the residence. Officials said three people were inside when the blaze began. An adult woman and the child were pronounced dead at the scene, while an adult man was taken to a hospital.

Neighbors said the man was the child’s father and the woman who died was her grandmother. Largo Fire Rescue said the man was stable after being hospitalized. Officials had not publicly identified the victims by name as of Tuesday, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office was handling the investigation into the cause.

The fire spread fast enough to alarm nearby residents in the tightly packed park. Neighbor Kenneth Roberts said flames rose high into the air and sent sparks across the area. Another neighbor, Kevin Smith, said he woke to yelling and saw the home engulfed. Smith said a man was outside screaming for help, but the flames were too intense for neighbors to reach those inside.

The response drew crews from Largo and other Pinellas County fire agencies. Fire officials said the home’s location inside the park created access challenges, with firefighters stretching hose lines a long distance to reach the structure. The fire was brought under control, but the home was badly damaged.

Residents said the deaths hit the neighborhood hard because the family was familiar to many people in the park. Neighbors described the girl as cheerful and active, often playing outdoors near the home. McCray, a neighbor, said the death of a child should break people’s hearts. Ubiles, another resident, said the family was kind and well liked.

Investigators had not announced whether smoke alarms, electrical issues or other factors played a role. The State Fire Marshal’s Office generally reviews fatal fires to determine origin and cause. No timeline for the final findings had been released Tuesday.

The case remained under investigation, and fire officials said additional details would be released when available.
