A mechanic working at the property reported hearing a gunshot before police found Dalaysia Brewton mortally wounded inside the home.
CANTON, Ohio — A mechanic working at a Canton property heard a gunshot and called 911 Tuesday afternoon, helping bring officers to a home where 21-year-old Dalaysia N. Brewton was found fatally wounded, according to police and local reports.
The emergency call offers additional detail about the early moments of an investigation that led to the arrest of 18-year-old Javon M. Ogden. Ogden has been charged with reckless homicide and tampering with evidence. A judge set his bond at $500,000 during a Thursday arraignment in Canton Municipal Court.
Police said the shooting was reported at about 2:35 p.m. in the 600 block of 11th Street NE. Officers who arrived at the property found Brewton with a gunshot wound to the head. Canton Fire paramedics attempted life-saving measures before she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The mechanic told 911 dispatchers that he had been working on a vehicle in the garage when he heard a “pop,” according to a local radio report. He then went toward the back of the home and saw Brewton on the floor. The caller’s report helped officers reach the scene quickly.
The caller also told dispatchers that Ogden gave an account suggesting the firearm discharged after it fell. That account has not been established as a finding by investigators. Police have not released a complete reconstruction of the shooting or publicly said what they believe caused the gun to fire.
Officers located Ogden nearby and took him into custody, police said. The tampering with evidence charge concerns an allegation that the gun was moved after the shooting, according to local reporting. Authorities have not released additional details about where the firearm was found or what investigators believe happened to it after the shooting.
Police also have not publicly announced a motive or described the relationship between Brewton and Ogden. The reckless homicide charge is an accusation and does not amount to a finding of guilt. Further details about the evidence could emerge as the case moves through court.
Ogden appeared in Canton Municipal Court on Thursday, where his bond was set at $500,000. He is scheduled to return to court Sept. 9 at 10:30 a.m. Canton police said the investigation into Brewton’s death remains ongoing.
