17-Year-Old Killed on Interstate; Texas Couple Now Charged

Alyssa Wilson, 17, was a McCluer North senior with college plans before she was fatally shot while driving.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Alyssa Wilson was nearing her 18th birthday, finishing her senior year and looking toward college when authorities say she was fatally shot while driving on Interstate 170, leaving her family and school grieving as two Texas residents face criminal charges.

Wilson, 17, died after the Oct. 14 shooting on southbound I-170 in St. Louis County. Authorities have charged Willie Herndon, 42, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. His wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, is charged with hindering prosecution. Investigators have said the couple did not know Wilson, and officials have not announced a motive.

Wilson was a senior at McCluer North High School, where the school described her as a student-athlete and office aide. She planned to attend college the following year. Her father, Robert Hickman, said Wilson was excited about her future and was about two months away from turning 18 when she died.

Hickman had previously taught Wilson and said their relationship grew beyond the classroom. He was in the process of adopting her when she was killed, according to his account. He described a teenager with a strong personality, ambitions and plans for adulthood. Wilson had discussed studying criminal justice, attending Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and participating in ROTC, Hickman said.

On the night Wilson died, she was headed to meet friends at an event at the St. Louis Zoo, according to family and investigators. When she failed to arrive, Hickman said a friend contacted him. Officers were called to the southbound interstate near Midland Boulevard at about 7:20 p.m. and found Wilson wounded inside a crashed vehicle. She was taken to a hospital and later died.

Investigators said surveillance footage showed a white SUV stopped on the shoulder of I-170 before the shooting. Authorities allege Willie Herndon got out, remained near the vehicle and fired as Wilson’s vehicle approached. He returned to the SUV, which then left the area, investigators said. Authorities have said Wilson had no known connection to the Herndons and that road rage was not believed to be involved.

The apparent lack of a connection has left one of the central questions unanswered. Investigators have not disclosed a motive or explained why Wilson was allegedly targeted. Hickman called her death a “senseless act” while appearing with officials after charges were announced Monday.

Authorities said license plate readers helped trace the suspect vehicle to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois. The Herndons were taken into custody there after investigators conducted surveillance. Police later searched the hotel room and said they recovered evidence tied to the case, including a firearm. Officials said information obtained during the investigation may also be relevant to other cases, but they have not publicly established those connections.

St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price-Smith said Taiya Herndon’s hindering prosecution charge stems from allegations that she drove Willie Herndon to Illinois after the shooting. Willie Herndon was being held on a $1 million cash-only bond, while Taiya Herndon’s bond was set at $500,000 cash only. Both remain accused, and the charges have not been proven in court.

For Wilson’s family, the criminal case proceeds alongside plans that will now go unrealized. Hickman said the family had been preparing for a vacation and Wilson’s approaching birthday. As prosecutors pursue the case, investigators have said they are continuing to examine the shooting and any possible links to other investigations, while the motive for Wilson’s death remains publicly unknown.
