Police have disclosed few details about what led to the Cypress Avenue gunfire that killed an 18-year-old and injured two boys.
FONTANA, Calif. — Two boys wounded in a Fontana shooting have been released from hospitals while detectives investigate the gunfire that killed an 18-year-old and resulted in the arrest of a 13-year-old suspect.
The shooting was reported at about 6:11 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, in the 9900 block of Cypress Avenue. Fontana police said officers responding to reports of gunfire found three male victims with gunshot wounds. They were 12, 15 and 18 years old.
The 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The two younger boys were taken to local hospitals, treated for their injuries and later released, police said. Authorities had not publicly identified any of the victims in the initial information available about the case.
Investigators later identified a 13-year-old Fontana boy as a suspect. Police said he was located within the city and arrested on suspicion of murder before being booked into juvenile hall.
Several major questions about the shooting remain unanswered. Authorities have not publicly said what happened immediately before the gunfire, whether the boys knew one another or what investigators believe may have prompted the shooting. Police also have not announced details about the firearm involved.
The lack of a publicly stated motive leaves the sequence of events incomplete several days after the shooting. Police have confirmed the ages of those involved, the location, the victims’ medical outcomes and the juvenile arrest, but they have not released a more detailed account of the confrontation.
The suspect’s age also limits some of the information commonly available in an adult criminal case. His name has not been released, and the reports reviewed for this story did not identify a scheduled juvenile court hearing or announce further court action. The murder allegation remains an accusation as the case moves through the juvenile justice process.
Detectives continue seeking information that could clarify what happened on Cypress Avenue. Police have asked witnesses or others with relevant information to contact Detective Samuel Saenz as the department works to determine the circumstances behind the shooting.
