A Clark County jury in Washington state convicted Julio Segura of Yakima on Friday for his involvement in the tragic death of Vancouver police officer Donald Sahota in 2022. Segura was found guilty of charges including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and eluding police, related to the incident in which Sahota was fatally shot.
The unfortunate event took place on January 29, 2022, when Sahota, who was off duty at his home in Battle Ground, was fatally wounded. Segura had earlier robbed a gas station near Vancouver and led deputies on a chase to Battle Ground. As Segura ran towards the Sahota residence, drone footage revealed a conversation between him and someone at the home before Sahota intervened.
During a struggle between Sahota and Segura in the driveway, Segura fatally stabbed Sahota multiple times. A responding deputy mistakenly shot Sahota as he picked up a gun and ran towards the house. Sahota succumbed to his gunshot wounds, leading prosecutors to argue that Segura’s actions directly contributed to his death.
Segura’s defense claimed that Sahota and the deputy’s response to the situation were reckless, while Segura himself claimed self-defense when he stabbed Sahota. The defense also called for better training for law enforcement in handling similar situations. Sentencing for Segura is scheduled for June 27.
Vancouver Police Chief Jeff Mori expressed gratitude for the verdict, acknowledging the continued pain and tragedy of Sahota’s death for his family and friends. The case has brought attention to the critical need for effective responses to high-pressure situations involving law enforcement officers and suspects.
