Kukurantumi, Ghana — A violent confrontation between police and residents has led to the temporary closure of the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region. Following directives from the Inspector-General of Police, all personnel have been withdrawn from the facility due to safety concerns after it was attacked on September 21, 2025.
According to a statement from the Eastern Regional Police Command, the unrest was sparked by the death of a local man, identified as Bright Kena, also known as D-ball. Kena had been in custody for charges related to unlawful entry and theft and was receiving medical treatment at a community hospital when he died.
The attack on the police station occurred around 7 a.m., when a group of angry youths reportedly assaulted the officers and tried to set the building on fire using stones and clubs. Reinforcement units were dispatched immediately, helping to restore order and calm in the area.
Following the incident, the police have initiated investigations, engaging Kena’s family and local leaders to ensure transparency. The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department are conducting independent inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his death.
