St. Augustine, Florida – Months after a harrowing road rage incident that left him feeling threatened for his safety, 65-year-old Robert Wilson, a homeless veteran, is calling for accountability. The event, which occurred in August, underscores a troubling rise in road rage violence in Northeast Florida, highlighted by multiple incidents this year.
Wilson described the confrontation as life-altering, emphasizing the need for justice. Surveillance footage corroborates his claims about the encounter on Anastasia Boulevard, where police reported that it turned violent. “At my age, I shouldn’t have to face such aggression,” Wilson said, reflecting on the encounter that left him shaken.
The incident unfolded as Wilson was approaching Veterans Village in St. Augustine, part of his efforts to rebuild his life through the Home Again program. According to police reports, the confrontation began around 9:46 a.m. when a truck started honking aggressively at Wilson’s vehicle as he slowed down to turn.
Video evidence depicts a truck blocking traffic before the driver exited, approached Wilson’s car, and accused him of cutting him off. Officers noted that Wilson was merely executing his turn when the aggressive driver lunged at him. “It escalated quickly,” Wilson recalled. “Before I knew it, he had his hands on my neck, and I thought I was going to lose consciousness.”
The suspect admitted to the police that he had grabbed Wilson in a fit of rage and was subsequently arrested. Charges against the driver include burglary with battery and battery by strangulation. Wilson expressed a strong desire for the incident not to be swept under the rug. “I will not let this go unpunished. It’s simply unacceptable,” he stated.
This case is a part of a worrying trend in Northeast Florida, which has seen at least five road rage-related incidents this year, including shootings and other violent confrontations. One such recent case involved a local musician, further highlighting the unpredictability and risks associated with road rage.
Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Steven Coppola advises drivers to remain calm and consider stepping away during heated moments on the road. “If you’re feeling angry or stressed, it’s better to take a break. Don’t rush when you’re emotionally charged,” he urged.
Experts indicate that incidents of road rage are on the rise nationally, with numerous cases involving firearms each year. Wilson aims to raise awareness through his story, hoping it will encourage others to think twice before allowing anger to dictate their actions while driving.
