New Delhi, India: Scientists have recently uncovered the fascinating reason behind the rare phenomenon of a young man’s brain turning into glass following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy back in 79 AD. In a groundbreaking study, researchers have attributed this transformation to the fossilization of brain tissue, shedding light on the mysterious process of vitrification.
Guido Giordano, a leading volcanologist from Roma Tre University in Rome, explained that the victim’s body tissue likely reached extreme temperatures exceeding 950 degrees Fahrenheit before rapidly cooling and solidifying into glass. This process, known as vitrification, is akin to the formation of obsidian glass from volcanic lava cooling quickly upon contact with water.
Contrary to popular belief, the pyroclastic flows emitted by Mount Vesuvius during the eruption were not hot enough to cause the victim’s brain to vitrify. These flows, which contained high-speed volcanic material and dangerous gases, only reached temperatures of up to 465 degrees Celsius and cooled down too slowly for vitrification to occur.
Despite some skepticism from the scientific community, researchers posit that the young man’s brain likely transformed into glass due to a brief but intense exposure to a scorching ash cloud during the eruption. The presence of his spine and skull likely shielded his brain from complete destruction, enabling some of the tissue to undergo this remarkable transformation into a glass-like substance.
Archaeologists originally discovered the charred remains of this young man in the 1960s, estimating his age to be around 20 years old at the time of the volcanic eruption. However, it was not until 2018 that Italian anthropologist Pier Paolo stumbled upon the unusual discovery of the victim’s blackened brain tissue with glass-like fragments inside his skull.
Giordano highlighted that previous studies have revealed the preservation of neurons and proteins within the victim’s brain, offering potential insights that could challenge existing theories about the impact and sequence of events during the catastrophic Mount Vesuvius eruption. This extraordinary finding opens new doors for understanding the complex interplay between volcanic activity and human anatomy in ancient civilizations.
